DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) –  An advocacy group has submitted petition signatures to Iowa lawmakers asking them to oppose a bill that would allow children under 14 to use handguns with parental supervision.

Iowans for Gun Safety delivered more than 1,000 petition signatures Tuesday to members of the Democratic-controlled Senate, which must decide if the bill survives this session.

The Republican-majority House approved the legislation in February. The measure would allow a child of any age to use a pistol or revolver with direct supervision of a parent or guardian. Current law allows children 14 and older to do so.

The group Iowans for Gun Safety argues the bill will lead to more injuries and death involving children. The Iowa Firearms Coalition maintains parents should determine when their kids are ready to learn handgun safety.
