NEAR MOLINE, Ill. (KWQC) – A barge carrying anhydrous ammonia ran aground in the Mississippi River.
Two barges got stuck on Saturday, September 3, 2016, between lock and dams 14 and 16. According to the Coast Guard, one barge was able to get unstuck, and the other remains.
The Coast Guard plans to run more water through the locks to raise the water level and get the barge unstuck. If that plan doesn’t work, the Coast Guard will then attempt to use two tug boats and push and pull on the barge in hopes of jarring it out. A final solution would be to offload the cargo and transfer it to another barge.
The barge owned by Kirby Corporation is not leaking, and the Coast Guard says no pollution has been detected from the ship running aground. A vessel is on scene monitoring the situation.
